IMPORTANT: AAFCO Defines Human Grade Standard
01/05/2017
The Human Grade claim is on A LOT of pet food and treat packages. It won't be for long.
Here's why.
The claim verification process just got a WHOLE LOT tougher, and states are enforcing this clarified regulation.
Bad news... they intend to "clean up" a situation where most companies are making a claim they should NOT be making.
Good news... if you qualify to make the claim, the "number of players allowed on the field" just got a whole lot fewer. The claim actually means something.
In order to substantiate that a “human grade” claim is truthful and not misleading, a manufacturer making one or more human-grade claims should have documentation that:
a. Each of the individual ingredient suppliers has verified that the individual ingredients supplied to the manufacturer are fit for human consumption.
b. Every ingredient and the resulting product are stored, handled, processed, and transported in a manner that is consistent and compliant with regulations for good manufacturing practices (GMPs) for human edible foods as specified in 21 CFR 117.
c. The manufacturing facility is licensed to produce human food by the appropriate authority (which varies by jurisdiction). Such evidence may include, but not be limited to, facility licenses or permits for the operation of edible food manufacturing facilities or results of most recent inspections issued by local, county, or state public health authorities.
